Up until recently, the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. Silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which could lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction can result in the creation of completely new species.
The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word for unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took form in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into different species in a gradual and predictable way.
In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can result in the development of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific tests however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is a variety of reasons. Scientists are studying evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing new drugs or enhancing existing ones. Others do this to improve the quality of animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have an intense faith in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, many are. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most well-known type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth was created only recently.
OECs might not be as popular however their beliefs are as fierce like the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists are able to accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." The theory suggests that God creates species from scratch and allows them to change over time. In the end these evolutionary changes will create new species that are similar to the original ones.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of textbooks for high school students have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) has been the driving force behind this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that a majority of them did not believe in evolution. The causes are not clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and a book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been delivering lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
